Learn the field from
principle to proof.

A research-grounded curriculum for understanding why condensates form and how experiments turn an observation into a defensible claim.

THEORY · 8 CHAPTERS

A physical language for condensates

Start with coexistence, then add molecular grammar, network connectivity, multicomponent composition and active cellular control.

ONE CONTINUOUS PATH

Build the field in four connected steps—not as isolated facts.

CHAPTER 01

Coexistence thermodynamics

Why one solution becomes two phases

CORE QUESTIONWhat must be true for a dilute phase and a dense phase to coexist at equilibrium?
01 · CONCEPT

Phase separation lowers the total free energy when mixing entropy can no longer compensate for favorable self-association or an unfavorable solvent. Coexisting phases have equal chemical potentials and equal osmotic pressure. The binodal marks coexistence; the spinodal marks the limit of local stability. They are not interchangeable.

MINIMAL MODELf(φ) / kBT = (φ/N) ln φ + (1 − φ) ln(1 − φ) + χφ(1 − φ)

A minimal Flory–Huggins free-energy density. φ is polymer volume fraction, N chain length and χ an effective interaction parameter.

02 · WHAT THE CLASSIC WORK ESTABLISHED

Polymer solution theory supplied the first compact language for chain length, solvent quality and criticality. Modern condensate experiments inherit its central observables: saturation concentration, dense-phase concentration, tie lines and critical points.

HOW TO READ THE RESULT
  • Below csat: one homogeneous phase.
  • Inside the binodal: dilute and dense phases coexist; changing total concentration mainly changes their relative volumes.
  • Inside the spinodal: infinitesimal composition fluctuations grow without a nucleation barrier.
WHAT TO MEASURE
  • Dilute- and dense-phase concentrations
  • Temperature or salt-dependent coexistence curves
  • Phase volumes for a lever-rule check
